When you receive your medicinal cannabis, whether it's flower, oil, edibles, or capsules, proper storage isn’t just about convenience - it’s essential for maintaining potency, preserving freshness, and ensuring safety, especially around children or pets.
Here’s a guide to storing your medicinal cannabis the right way at home.
1. Keep It Cool, Not Cold
Cannabis is best stored in a cool environment, ideally between 15°C and 21°C. Excessive heat can dry out cannabinoids and terpenes, which reduces potency and flavour. On the flip side, avoid freezing or refrigerating cannabis flower can cause the trichomes (the part that contains THC and CBD) to become brittle and break off. A cupboard, drawer, or dark closet works well for optimal storage.
2. Avoid Light Exposure
UV rays degrade cannabinoids quickly, so light - especially sunlight - is one of the biggest enemies of cannabis longevity. Store your products in opaque or tinted containers (like their original jars, or amber glass jars) and keep them out of direct light.
3. Control the Humidity
Too much moisture can lead to mould. Too little can make flower dry, harsh, and less effective. The sweet spot is 55–62% relative humidity. Use humidity control packs (like Boveda) inside your storage jars to keep things balanced.
4. Keep It Secure and Out of Reach
If you have children, pets, or guests in your home, storing your cannabis in a locked or child-resistant container is crucial. Always store edibles separately and clearly labelled to avoid confusion.
5. How to Store Different Product Types
- Flower: Airtight glass jars in a dark, cool place.
- Oils/Tinctures: Keep in their original dropper bottles, away from light and heat.
