Understanding the Different Dosage Forms of Cannabis

There are many different dosage forms of Cannabis on the market - it’s easy to feel overwhelmed thinking of which one would best suit your needs. Different dosage forms offer distinct experiences, effects, and onset times. Let’s explore the most common dosage forms of cannabis and what you should know about each.

1. Inhalation
Vaping (using vaporisers or vape pens) and combusting (not recommended) are the most traditional and fast-acting methods of cannabis consumption.

  • Onset Time: Within minutes
  • Duration: 1–3 hours
  • Pros: Immediate effects, easy to titrate dosage
  • Cons: May irritate lungs; can produce an odour

Vaping is heating cannabis without combustion to release cannabinoids and terpenes in vapour form. Read our article here about why vaporising is recommended over combusting.

2. Sublingual: Oils
Oils are cannabis extracts typically administered under the tongue using a dropper or a syringe. Once held under the tongue for 60-90 seconds, the oil is then swallowed (ingested).

  • Onset Time: 15–45 minutes
  • Duration: 2–4 hours
  • Pros: Faster onset than edibles, discreet, precise dosing
  • Cons: Taste may be unpleasant to some

3. Oral: Edibles and Capsules
Edibles (gummies, pastilles and chews) and capsules deliver cannabinoids through the digestive system.

  • Onset Time: 30 minutes to 2 hours
  • Duration: 4–8+ hours
  • Pros: Discreet, no respiratory impact, long-lasting relief
  • Cons: Delayed onset can lead to overconsumption, effects vary widely between individuals

Cannabis oils are also ingested after holding them under the tongue. Direct ingestion of oils can offer a similar experience to edibles with more flexibility in dosing. Oils consumed in this manner can also be ingested by adding to food or beverages to disguise the taste.

4. Topicals: Creams & Balms
Topicals are applied to the skin for localised relief of pain, inflammation, or skin conditions.

  • Onset Time: 15 minutes to 1 hour
  • Duration: Varies
  • Pros: Non-psychoactive, targeted relief
  • Cons: Limited to localised use; less suitable for systemic effects

The best cannabis dosage form depends on your goals. Always start low and go slow, especially with edibles and new delivery methods. Consulting with your medical practitioner can help you make the safest and most effective choice.
